SNOW is
a professional magician, but some people think that
all of my books are "magical." But what is magic, really?
Many
years ago I read a short story called "The Magic Man"
by Charles Beaumont. The gist of the story was this:
A magician who had
come to a small town every year and amazed the people
with his magic was getting old and had decided to retire.
"Tell
us how you did it," the people cried. "Tell us how you worked
the wonderful magic that has delighted us for so many years.
"No, you don't
want that," the old magician answered.
"If I tell you, then it won't be magic anymore."
But the people
begged and he decided that since this is what
they wanted he may as well comply. He began explaining his
secrets and at first the people listened with excitement.
But as he continued, they grew less and less impressed.
Finally a man
in the crowd yelled out, "Why, they're just tricks!"
" Indeed, the kind of magic one finds in the
"real" world
often is just tricks. If you're really interested in peeking
behind the curtain, here are some places to look.
If you want real magic, however, you'll have to look to
a deeper place.
