Charles Mathes' Top Indian Lunch

Sure there are cheaper places down in the East Village
and plenty of other expensive buffets in midtown -- I've
tried most of them.  My new favorite, however, is

BUKHARA GRILL

217 E 49 St  Between 2nd & 3rd  (212) 888-2839
(The second location on 58th Street has changed hands and I can no longer recommend it.)

Like most Indian places in midtown, the lunch buffet at the Bukhara Grills is about $14.  For this you get endless portions of a good variety of Indian dishes.  The menu changes, but there are always meat and vegetarian dishes, curries, tandoori, and the usual extras.  Naan is made fresh as you're seated and delivered to your table direct from the tandoor.  The ambience is relax and the decor is elegant.

If you have lunch here, don't worry about making dinner plans!
