Charles Mathes Eats Greek

No, it's not all Greek to me.
I don't eat Greek that often, but when I do
it's more than likely to be at Uncle Nick's
(no relation to Big Nick's -- at least as far as I know)

UNCLE NICK'S
747 Ninth Avenue
(Between 50th and 51st Streets)
(212) 245-7992

Uncle Nick's is one of many wonderful little restaurants on Ninth Avenue, a multi-ethnic neighborhood near Times Square.  Most tourists never get over here, which is a shame.  It's as safe as anywhere else in the city and you can really get some food bargains.  So they call this neighborhood Hell's Kitchen.  So what?

I also am more likely to be here at lunch during the week than at any time else.  Frankly, I find Greek restaurants rather pricey, and Uncle Nick's is no exception.  Part of this is the Fish syndrome.  Fresh seafood is never cheap, and since many Greek places specialize in seafood, what are you going to do?  But like a lot of New York restaurants in slightly out-of-the way locations, Uncle Nick's offers a great lunch special to fill the tables during the week.  The lamb shiskabob, for instance, is I think about $7.95 ($6.95? I'll have to go back and check) weekdays at lunch.  When I came once on a Sunday I found the same dish was $12.95.   The fish, by the way, is always fresh and delicious -- and cheaper than you'll find it at many other restaurants.

Arlene swears by the taramasalata.  Enjoy.
